Akita Club of America

The Akita Club of America is a member of the American Kennel Club and, as such, is the only National Akita Breed Club which is recognized and sanctioned by the AKC. The main objectives of the Akita Club of America are the preservation and protection of the breed and improvement of the character and conformation of the Akita as described in the official breed standard.

About the Akita

A natural monument in Japan, the Akita’s proud heritage includes hunting large game such as bear, elk, and boar. This powerful and dignified member of the Working Group is renowned for courage and loyalty, but may not be tolerant of other animals. His luxurious double coat can include any combination of vibrant colors. Aloof toward strangers, they form strong family bonds. Highly intelligent with keen sense of humor, the Akita responds best to respectful commands and training techniques that rely on motivation rather than force. Strong-willed and proud, Akitas are not receptive to abusive methods. Akitas originated in Japan many, many years ago, and have been designated a natural monument of Japan. They are a large, impressive breed with natural guarding instincts. While generally reserved with people they don’t know, Akitas are affectionate with their family. They tend to be independent, and while they will always know where you are in your home, they do not need constant attention as do some of the more dependent breeds. Hotel Reservations

The Holiday Inn Wilmington Host Hotel  reservations for the 2017 ACA Nationals are currently sold out but there is a wait list.  If you put your name on the wait list, make sure you have a back up reservation at one of the overflow hotels! Rooms often open up as the date approaches. Rooms are $119 plus tax.

The hotel will not allow more than two rooms per person, no exceptions! Terrie Breen will receive a weekly reservation list from the hotel. If someone has booked more than two rooms the additional rooms will be canceled. Unfortunately, The host hotel only has 80 guest rooms for ACA, so to be fair to all our members and guests attending the National we must limit the bookings to two rooms per person. Overflow Information under "Other Accommodations" tab.

The over-sized rooms are equipped with a mini fridge . There is an indoor swimming pool, complimentary WI-FI and exercise facility. And there are indoor dog bathing facilities! The property is centrally located to shopping and many restaurants.

There will no dog limit enforced at the Holiday Inn Wilmington, however it is expected that guests respect the property and rooms as noted in the premium list.  A pet deposit of $30 will be charged for each room in which a dog(s) is housed per 3 day stay.  This is a non-refundable cleaning fee.  Plastic sheets must be placed under all crates in the rooms.  ACA will sell sheets  at $3 each or you can bring your own.  There is a 4 dog per room limit.  Our block of rooms is held and contracted by the National Show Committee.  If you book your room outside of the rate block we can not ensure that the property will be flexible with the dog limit.

Exhibitors and spectators are welcome to book their stay at any local hotel they choose that meets their needs.  The National Show Committee blocks rooms and negotiates rates at most dog friendly hotels in the area and we are taking advantage of their relationship with these nearby hotels and ability to negotiate a premium rate.
